i was doing my chemistry practical today.we were all given different inorganic salts for detection.i got cat-ion of ammonium+.but i got while i used diluted stock solution to detect an-ion,i got both carbonate2- and chloride-.but only carbonate was correct.why was the chloride test positive then?

no.detection tests are unique to any ion.

actually,water i used to dilute the solution had chloride.
